Responsible Travel: Making
Eco-Friendly Decisions While Traveling
Whether it’s intentional or unintentional, we all leave traces when we travel; airplanes are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, hotels are major water consumers, and tourists often do not recycle. But lasting change can come when we rethink our travel habits and activities. While we are all learning how to be more environmentally conscious, there are decisions we can make that will leave an impact for years to come on the places we visit.
Eco-Friendly Places To Visit
What destinations are on your bucket list? You may be surprised to learn that some of them commit to Earth-friendly policies and practices. And because the destination you choose to visit can make a global difference, you can consider visiting environmentally-conscious locations, including:
- Namibia, a country in Southern Africa, is an excellent example. Within its constitution, the importance of habitat conservation to their society is enshrined, as well as the protection of natural resources.
- Green Velo, Poland is also another destination that’s committed to being eco-friendly. Its epic Green Velo trail aims to have no impact on water supplies or vegetation. The Świętokrzyski National Park, with its huge forests and mountains, is protected by the country, allowing wildlife to remain undisturbed among historical relics.
- Bonito, Brazil is a beautiful town that is additionally placing ecotourism first. Their attractions boast of sustainability, such as the famous Rio da Prata river known for its crystal-clear water. Wild birds such as macaws, parrots, ibis, and jays flourish along the river, allowing tourists and natives to witness rare sites and views.
Other locations for sustainable holidays include Bremen, Germany, Gothenburg, Sweden, Oslo, Norway, Helsinki, Finland, and more. Support these places in helping to make the world a better place.
Discover Green-Minded Hotels
Travelers don’t often consider the ecological mission of the hotels where they stay. The fact is though, that eco-friendly travel is so much more than the sights we see. Being an environmentally-conscious traveler means thinking more consciously about the hotel or resort you choose. Identifying whether or not a hotel is green-minded starts with simply asking the hotel some questions such as:
- Do you recycle or compost?
- What are your accreditations?
- Do you offer shuttle or public transportation services?
Look for hotels that are approved or accredited by respected programs such as Green Key, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, and the U.S. Green Building Council, which oversees LEED certification. And even if you are unable to find a resort that implements sustainable practices, make responsible travel changes such as turning off the lights when leaving rooms, re-using linens, avoiding plastic or disposable silverware, and recycling as you go.
Choose Sustainable Activities
Continue your commitment to being environmentally friendly by engaging in green activities. If possible, reduce your footprint through activities that include:
- Sailing
- Snorkeling
- Biking
- Swimming
- Buying souvenirs from local artisans
The Green Wellness Route in Slovenia is an excellent example of a location that offers sustainable activities - visitors can unwind at local spas and vineyards and take in breathtaking views of wildflowers. And regardless of what a destination primarily offers, try to bike, hike, or walk when possible. Explore neighborhoods, farmers' markets, and historical sites all on the soles of your feet. Your body and the environment will thank you!
